Book Review: The Peter Principle: Why things always go wrong
This book was published in 1969. However, the theory of the book is still suitable current. Before I read this book, I thought it maybe is another book that guides you on how to get a promotion in the job, how to increase potential, or competitiveness by yourself. However, I read the foreword of the book by Robert. I found that it maybe doesn’t seem to be what I thought.
"Incompetent" is still happening everywhere at my age. Not everyone is suitable for any job function. In the workspace on my side, the senior employee always gets the chance to promote and most cases may happen. Unfortunately, it may face the “incompetent” issue very easily. For e.g. In university, teaching and researching always need to do at the same time if teachers need to pass the qualification of teacher evaluation. But the research and teaching should have different skills. In the company, the senior employee with good technique skills gets promoted to management job function. In most cases is the employee needs hander management well and technique and the result are not doing well on both sides. The most important thing is can we realize I am already in the “incompetent” position. Even say “No” when you will be in the “incompetent” position. In my point of view, the second thing is most important. Everyone all needs to be promoted to a higher position for more salary, more honor. However, it may get more disappointment, sadness, and pain. In the end, life is a mess. Opposite, if you still do not reach “incompetent”, find a way to reach it more quickly.
This book shares a lot of case studies to prove the concept of the book. it also can help readers more easily to catch the concept of the book. From this book, you can self-reflection about do I am “incompetent” or not. If not, congratulation, you still have room to be higher position. If yes, that is okay, this book also has several case studies to let you know how to reverse situations and made you lift more easily.
Hope you can have a chance to enjoy it.
